I originally thought I wanted to be a history teacher, and I even started university. But then I decided it wasn’t for me and I got a job at Altrad as a Tech Clerk. I didn’t know anything about the industry, but then the Commercial Manager for my region talked to me about an apprenticeship. I looked at the options and chose the degree apprenticeship route.
You could say I fell into this kind of work – but I discovered I really enjoy it!
My apprenticeship is great! I’m working towards becoming a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, and I go one day a week to Leeds Beckett University. When I’m not at college I’m working as a Commercial Administrator – I even get lots of time to complete my assignments while I’m at work.
I feel like I’ve been so lucky starting my career at Altrad. I’ve got a development plan for the next five years of my apprenticeship and all my managers have been supportive. And at the end of my apprenticeship, I will be a qualified Chartered Quantity Surveyor!
The best thing about my apprenticeship…
I love the team I work with, and I get to work on such interesting projects.
Where I see my potential taking me at Altrad: My long-term goal is to work towards becoming a Commercial Manager at Altrad.
What I’d say to others thinking about an apprenticeship at Altrad…
As a woman joining an industrial business – and also as I had no experience with anything to do with engineering or chemical sites – I’ve found it to be the most supportive place and really rewarding. I’d say to others to not be put off by not having any experience, and that Altrad is a place that really values people’s enthusiasm. I’ve certainly felt very supportive by the whole team across the business.
I feel proud of…
The fact I had absolutely no idea about anything to do with the business, but now I can sit in a room and can contribute and join in. I feel proud that I now understand, and I feel I’ve learnt so much.
How I’d sum up my apprenticeship…
Challenging and inspiring. I feel very fortunate for the support Altrad has given me to get my qualifications.
